While nine million viewers tuned in to watch the launch of the second series of Downton Abbey last Sunday, across the pond they are also gearing up for a drama that encapsulates the early part of the 1900s.  To promote the second series of Boardwalk Empire HBO managed to get two, fully functioning, 1920s subway trains onto the tracks in Manhattan.  Every weekend this month you can hop on the prohibition-era train and be transported back to the 1920s.  Well almost, HBO have done a good job of using the available space to make sure passengers know exactly what this ride is about!

Clicking through your Facebook photos is the modern equivalent of sitting on a sofa and leafing through a heavy photograph album.  So what is the next step?  Intel have created “Museum of Me”; an app which hauls data from Facebook and packages it into an interesting tour of you online presence.  The app displays your pictures as if you were wandering through a museum and it also goes further and displays your likes,  friends and videos giving a rounded snapshop of the person you are on Facebook.

It’s certainly not clunky, it’s visually interesting and smoothly executed. It is clear that Intel wanted to make this an experience rather than just a tool to view your data.  But does it also raise questions about how much data is freely available on sites such as Facebook?

Although the technology isn’t quite perfect yet, Topshop has given its customers a chance to try on clothes virtually with an augmented reality changing room in one of its Moscow stores.  Users….erm, sorry, shoppers…get to try on anything they like, then pose and photograph themselves all by standing in front of a screen.  We’re not yet at a time where we can superimpose the feeling of the fabric it’s a clever and interesting idea.  Fun too, as you can see from the video!

Where can you find gingerbread love hearts, Pretzels, Spanish Churros, Belgium Waffles, German Feuerzangenbowle (mulled wine), beer, Krakauer (spicy German sausage) and authentic German French fries (not sure how that one works?) all in one place? At the annual winter wonderland at Hyde Park of course, who needs to leave London to experience an International Christmas market and carnival?  The Bavarian Village has gorgeous chalet style shops which are packed with yummy goodies, trinkets and baubles.  The Canadian talking moose head has to be seen to be believed.  What more could a girl want than a talking moose, snow and mulled wine?  Oh can’t forget the sweet shops stocked full of my favorite Haribo goodies.

My 1st visit on Sunday afternoon with a friend’s 4 year old in tow was great as we got to visit Santaland and ride on the Santa Express (previous experience tells me that you can look a bit strange if you don’t have a child in tow on the kiddie rides).  My 2nd visit on Wednesday night was an adult’s only affair with plenty of big kid entertainment.  Lots of mulled wine, beer and food.  The Ghost train made me laugh, a little scared of the roller coaster and the black hole was short and sweet but good.  Rides I missed due to irrational fear of heights included: the Giant Wheel, the big tall thing that looked way to scary and the reverse bungee (husband still suffering from that one). We refrained from the ice skating as didn’t want to show anyone up with my dancing on ice skills!

The Phone Box Experiment

Post by BEcause XM

Skype are running a rather unusual experiment at the moment. They have sent one man (Rob Cavazos, who is usefully fluent in German, English and Spanish) into the middle of the countryside somewhere in Europe, given him a tent and a phone box connected to Skype. To make things exciting they have put a webcam up, given him a sofa and a few other props, and challenged him to not leave the field of view for as long as possible. You can call up Rob anytime on the number given on-screen and just have a chat with him, it’s as simple as that.

It’s a really amusing concept and helps bring to life the interactivity of Skype. It is also a great call to action, inviting people to call up directly from their Skype lines. Have a look yourself on the official website, I recommend you just listen in for a little bit to some of the odd anecdotes people are chatting about, all though I am sure I caught him on the phone to his mum earlier.
