We’ve teamed up with Plan UK, the global children’s charity, to launch a year-long programme of consumer-facing events, aimed at boosting sponsorship and awareness levels.
The national roadshow is designed to give Plan ambassadors a platform to talk directly to potential individual sponsors about the work the charity does to help children in the world’s poorest countries.
The campaign kicked off at The Adventure Travel Show at Olympia, London (28-29th January), an occasion billed as “the UK’s only event dedicated to discovering the world off the beaten track”. Visitors were invited to spend some time in the Plan Base Camp where they could watch videos of the charity in action. Guests were also invited to learn how to create their own Paper Batik – one of the craft skills that Plan teaches to help lift people out of poverty.
To allow conversations to develop, a small café served free cups of tea and coffee. Brand Ambassadors talked to consumers about the work Plan does to improve education, health, water, sanitation and creating economic stability for people who need it the most.
Katie Penfold, Senior Account Director at BEcause, comments:
“We’re really proud to be working with such a passionate group of people to help lift the profile of a very worthy cause. We hope that the chance to reach globally-aware and active audiences at relevant consumer shows this year will allow Plan to secure the support it needs and deserves.”
The roadshow is due to visit other events this year including The Malvern Spring show and The Vitality Show. Its next outing will be at The Times Destination show on 4th February 2012.

Is there a way to visualise 0.38 litres of diesel per metric mile? As a figure it doesn’t sound very impressive. It actually shows how efficient the new Golf BlueMotion is with fuel and after years of work to get to this result Volkswagen think it’s definitely worth nothing. So Volkswagen needed a way to show consumers what it actually meant to them. They came up with BlueMotion Roulette. A clever interactive realtime gambelling experience that encouraged users to guess where, along the Norwegian equivelent of route 66, the new Golf would run out of fuel.
To increase their chances of getting it right users were able to explore every inch of the car on a website, test its aerodynamics and how it functions on different surfaces. Then they placed their bets. The car set off on its jourey, tracked in real-time and displayed on a map which used GoogleMaps and Streetview to allow users to follow the progress and feel part of the experience.
The car ran for 1570 km, the figure 0.38 litres per metric mile was exposed for what it actually is and users were excited because they became part of the experiment. An interesting way to use an app alongside real life experience to make sure a message is communicated well from brand and consumer.

Last weekend we launched a new 6-week summer roadshow for British Gas, featuring a Sustainability Café built from a recyclable shipping container.
The British Gas Sustainable Energy Space made its debut at the Bristol Balloon Festival, which was held on 11-14th August. It will next appear at new Hampton Court event, A Jolly Day Out, from 26-29th August, followed by four county shows in Buckinghamshire, Dorset, Berkshire and Worcestershire during September.
The new roadshow is designed to provide a welcoming platform for British Gas to talk to consumers about sustainable energy ideas and solutions. Visitors are able to enjoy free teas and coffees, whilst picking up energy-saving tips, and learning more about British Gas’ sustainable initiatives –smart meters, EnergySmart, free insulation for British Gas customers, energyshare (its partnership with River Cottage), A-rated boilers and microgeneration solutions such as Solar PV and Solar Thermal.
To reinforce the sustainability messages, we ensured that the entire experience is built with a strong eye on sustainability. All wood is from FSC regulated forests, waste is being recycled and all café equipment will be donated to local community-run kitchens at the end of the campaign.
In addition, power used to run the café at the first 3 events is being matched back into the Grid from 100 per cent British renewable sources. The remaining events will be powered by a containerised solar PV solution. And any carbon generated during transportation of the shipping container is being offset by PURE, the clean plant trust.
Karen Evans, managing director of BEcause, comments:
“British Gas is at the forefront of sustainable energy solutions, and this roadshow will take that message in a friendly, conversational manner to discerning family audiences around the UK. Having created a very successful exhibition for British Gas at last year’s START sustainability festival, we were delighted to be invited to build on that work with this larger summer roadshow.”

McDonalds recently came up with this great idea to promote its “Dollar Drink Day” in Canada. On a sweltering hot day by a lake popular with families, the company constructed an ice wall. Imbedded into the ice, in the shape of its famous golden arches, were 4,000 CDN dollar coins. As the sun beat down the ice melted and with a bit of chipping away the public got access to the booty! This was followed up by a “beach party” with a DJ, street promotional teams, hula hooping, limbo contests and giveaways.

This new development could be a game changer at trade shows, events and visitor centres. It’s a walk-in LCD display cube with real-time 3D rendering visualisation and surround sound! Blimey! Multiple users can take command of the screen simultaneously. Consumers can use the screen to get information, watch stunning visuals or just become immersed in the experience. It has been developed by Sensory Minds and it’s a great example of how touch screen technology can be applied on a far larger scale than our familiar smartphone or tablet interfaces.
