The 61 year-old tome will undergo a radical digital transformation for 2013. The print catalogue goes out to over 211 million people worldwide but this time there will be a twist. Using an augmented reality app people will be able to access a host of digital content. Users will be able to view videos, interact with on-screen environments and explore “inspiring” content. The hope is that this will make the catalogue more engaging and personal. It will also extend its life as content can be updated when new ranges are released or seasons change.

Last year Magnum launched a successful online game called Magnum Pleasure Hunt, where participants could trawl the internet in search of chocolate pieces. This year a new version appeared, called Magnum Pleasure Hunt #2. This time the intrepid online chocolate hunter could seek out chocolate pieces at locations around the world. A further extension, dubbed “Across Amsterdam”, was launched on the 22nd of April. Users could download an app that used augmented reality to show lumps of chocolate strewn around Amsterdam that players had to actually hit the streets to find.

According to Creativity-Online.com, Net-a-Porter is going to launch Augmented Reality Windows where consumers can interact and purchase products from the otherwise-online designer discount store. After seeing the popularity of the trial “Window Shop” shown in the video below, plans are to launch these interactive window displays in key cities across the world including Paris, London, Sydney and New York. Back in November 2011, BEcause business director Joss Davidge looked at how another online giant, eBay, was using window space in Manhattan to sell products using QR codes (New Visual Merchandising). It seems like Net-a-Porter want to take this one step further allowing consumers to experience the brand through a special mobile app that reacts to the products placed in the shop window revealing much more than just the price.

Recently Blippar, an augmented reality app created with advertising in mind, teamed up with Tesco to run a series of innovative ads in a national newspaper. Blipper uses a “magic lens” to turn 2D print advertising into an on screen 3D interactive experience. Instead of having to locate a QR code, scan it and wait for the experience to begin, Blippar works by “recognising things in the real world”. Without taking a picture, you can hold up your in-built phone camera to an advert or product and the screen will come alive with an interactive brand experience. With big names such as Tesco, Marmite and Cadbury’s having a go at using the technology we’re expecting much more to come from the Blippar team.

We love it when we spot somewhere we know in a film, a fleeting moment of fame for our local corner shop or the grand building on the way to work. This augmented reality app lets viewers see scenes from movies exactly where they were filmed. You can even get inside the film with the action!
It’s not live yet, but it will be coming to a street near you soon!
