OED Word Of the Year 2009…

It’s official everyone, the OED word of the year for 2009 is….. “unfriend”.
unfriend – verb – To remove someone as a ‘friend’ on a social networking site such as Facebook.
As in, “I decided to unfriend my roommate on Facebook after we had a fight.”
Well there you go. Have a look on the OUP Blog for a bit more info, i’m not entirely sold on the word myself but then they are the experts!
Foster’s Tracks Tweets

Browsing through the world-wide web this week we stumbled upon the Foster’s Ozometer. At first a little confused (all right a lot) about exactly what an Ozometer is, all became clear after a little looking around. The nifty little website actually analyses Twitter tweets in real-time, and gives them a rating on how well they fit into the Foster’s “No worries attitude”. Positive tweets get positive point, negative tweets lose them. This all goes into a big ranking list so you can check out just how Australian you are as a person. I think my favourite bit though is still just reading through all the random posts as they fly in, positive or not the nature of them brings a smile to my face. Check it out here.

The Phone Box Experiment

Skype are running a rather unusual experiment at the moment. They have sent one man (Rob Cavazos, who is usefully fluent in German, English and Spanish) into the middle of the countryside somewhere in Europe, given him a tent and a phone box connected to Skype. To make things exciting they have put a webcam up, given him a sofa and a few other props, and challenged him to not leave the field of view for as long as possible. You can call up Rob anytime on the number given on-screen and just have a chat with him, it’s as simple as that.
It’s a really amusing concept and helps bring to life the interactivity of Skype. It is also a great call to action, inviting people to call up directly from their Skype lines. Have a look yourself on the official website, I recommend you just listen in for a little bit to some of the odd anecdotes people are chatting about, all though I am sure I caught him on the phone to his mum earlier.

Festive

Getting in the spirit of all things festive, team BEcause got involved today with the annual Christmas decs. Have a look at our progression from regular office to winter wonderland.
Starting with recovering our veteran tree from the back of the broom cupboard….
After unwrapping the marginally dusty tree Phillipa and Nis set about giving it the TLC it needed…
The team (by now just Phillipa) set about adding decorations…
Until finally the tree was fully decorated in all it’s glory…
When finished you could actually feel the festive spirit through the company, just look how excited Bronwyn is…
Now to finish off the rest of the building. Winter wonderland complete.
