Picture the future

Post by BEcause XM

Having found this last week I have to say I am amazed. The “Sea Dragon” technology can not only sort your pictures and let you view thousands of them at once, it can also analyse them for constants and tag photos together. If you check out the youtube demo above, especially the example mentioning Notre Dame Cathedral. Basically summed up, the software has trawled through social sites on the net (for example Flickr), found all of the images of Notre Dame, rendered them together and then from this created a 3d model from this. Hopefully this could be the beginning of the end for hours spent tagging photos on facebook at the very least. Perhaps further forward this could be used in a more commercial way however, imagine at a click being able to find every picture online with a Coca-Cola advert in it. A standard facebook picture could become a clickable link to an online website, with rich media for a viewer to get right at information on the brand straight from the image.

Where can you find gingerbread love hearts, Pretzels, Spanish Churros, Belgium Waffles, German Feuerzangenbowle (mulled wine), beer, Krakauer (spicy German sausage) and authentic German French fries (not sure how that one works?) all in one place? At the annual winter wonderland at Hyde Park of course, who needs to leave London to experience an International Christmas market and carnival?  The Bavarian Village has gorgeous chalet style shops which are packed with yummy goodies, trinkets and baubles.  The Canadian talking moose head has to be seen to be believed.  What more could a girl want than a talking moose, snow and mulled wine?  Oh can’t forget the sweet shops stocked full of my favorite Haribo goodies.

My 1st visit on Sunday afternoon with a friend’s 4 year old in tow was great as we got to visit Santaland and ride on the Santa Express (previous experience tells me that you can look a bit strange if you don’t have a child in tow on the kiddie rides).  My 2nd visit on Wednesday night was an adult’s only affair with plenty of big kid entertainment.  Lots of mulled wine, beer and food.  The Ghost train made me laugh, a little scared of the roller coaster and the black hole was short and sweet but good.  Rides I missed due to irrational fear of heights included: the Giant Wheel, the big tall thing that looked way to scary and the reverse bungee (husband still suffering from that one). We refrained from the ice skating as didn’t want to show anyone up with my dancing on ice skills!

Big press (at least in the Blogging world) this week is Square launching a novel new way to accept credit card payments for small and mobile businesses. Using what is effectively a credit card skimming device and some smart new software anyone with an iphone/android phone/any phone with a headphone socket can take payment from their users.

Potentially the best part of the device for owners though are the setup charges. Designed for the small guys there is no setup fee and very limited ongoing costs. It also packs some smart security measures, such as pictures of the card holder coming through so you can be really sure it is not a stolen card. While this is great for little companies (think of the sandwich man coming round who can finally take card), we had more thoughts of pop up shops. Now it is really easy to make a small boutique stall at a local market a pop up shop for your brand, adding a sense of secrecy and surprise to the people who find it and really putting home a brand connection to users. Great tech, I hope it spreads fast.

A Very Viral Xmas

Post by BEcause XM

A brilliant christmas viral here for everyone, admittedly this was launched last year, but that just goes to show the great re-usability of launching a Christmas ad.

With over a million views on youtube this has to be yet another sure example of how a relatively cheap viral launched at the right time, in the right way, can give massive impact for a brand. I just wish I was in the creative meeting when someone piped up with the idea… “So let’s get a bank of microwaves, right. Then let’s make them all ping in time to the tune of Jingle Bells.” Must have been quite a bit of microwaved mulled wine.
